6th Ave

Then

The area around Tacoma’s present day 6th Avenue Business District (or 6th Ave.) has a less definitive, yet important story.  Developed plots sprung up at the turn of the century. The building which hosts Jazzbones dates back to 1900, when it opened as a pharmacy named Bell Drug Co. In the mid-fifties, 6th Ave became the main thoroughfare to the Narrows Bridge, creating traffic and congestion. While things calmed down after the State Route 16 connected to the Narrows Bridge in 1964, the area remained somewhat depressed throughout the 70s, 80s, and 90s.

Now

Eclectic and electric, 6th Ave is best known today for its bars and eateries. You can also find cafes; a comic store, record shop, and tattoo parlor; brew-houses and marijuana dispensaries; and my favorite bicycle shop. It’s a funky strip. While nightlife is popular with local college students from University of Puget Sound, young professionals and couples enjoy high-end dining options and casual, fair-priced-fare as well.

Architecture Style

The neighborhoods surrounding 6th Avenue represent the early Craftsman movement in the 1920s, typically on 1/8 acre lots.

Neighborhood Experience

Huddle in with friends at Engine House No. 9 or take a growler to-go and enjoy at home.
