West Slope

Then

While most of the residential lots were built in the 1950s, Salmon Beach was the first community to populate the western side of Tacoma. This secluded community emerged from a group of primitive fishing shacks built in the early 1900s. Being tucked away from the rest of Tacoma, Salmon Beach harbored a district of bootleggers in the 1920s and inspired a society of hippies in the 1960s.  The completion of the 2nd Narrows Bridge in October 14, 1950 increased the flow of people and soon, more west side neighborhoods sprouted.

Now

Views of the Narrows Bridge, the majestic Olympic Mountains and summer sunsets await.  West Tacoma residents can shop in Westgate and 6th Ave, and enjoy easy access to Gig Harbor (only ten minutes away).  This area is also a short drive to Chambers Bay Golf Course and Park, a scenic and serene setting in University Place.

Architecture Style

West Tacoma architecture can be characterized as west facing ramblers built in the 1950’s – many have large decks and daylight basements leading to a lower backyard.
