Stadium District

Then

The iconic and Hollywood-famous Stadium High School was initially built as a French château-inspired luxury hotel, commissioned by the influential Northern Pacific Railroad Company. Construction began and just two years later the panic of 1893 halted progress, leaving just a shell of the dream.  A fire gutted the building in 1898 and the project was scrapped and sold to the City of Tacoma. In 1903, Tacoma rallied behind architect and education board member Fredrick Heath to transform the building into the grand Tacoma High School. Classes commenced on September 10, 1906. By 1910, Heath completed the adjacent mega-amphitheater, giving Tacoma a premier outdoor event venue: Stadium Bowl.

Now

The Stadium District is on the rise again.  Stadium is the first neighborhood to benefit from the Hilltop Tacoma Link Extension set to be completed by 2022. This line will connect to the Theater District and Tacoma Dome Station downtown. Stadium sits adjacent to several hospitals, beautiful Wright Park and has plenty of “foodie” focused establishments.

Architecture Style

The Stadium District hosts some of the historic Victorian homes of the early 20th century, mid-century Colonials, and high-rise condominiums.

Neighborhood Experience

Do something different. Try lawn bowling in Wright Park and check out the Seymour Conservatory.
